Art Process

The art process happens through us, not because of us.”  - Elsaab

Elsaab O'Donovan is provisioned in various creative media and works in the medium that best complements her artistic concept. She draws inspiration from the world around her, capturing moments through her photos and translating them into imaginative, conceptual visuals or metaphors of a new subliminal world.

Her artworks often remain digital or serve as pre-sketches for the execution of artwork in traditional media, such as watercolour, acrylic, oil paint or charcoal.

When working in her digital studio, Elsaab employs photographic assemblage techniques, photo enhancement tools, digital ink or paint to bring her artwork to life. She also enjoys free-style sketching and often creates impromptu works that result from her subconscious.

During the first part of her art oeuvre, Elsaab experimented with sculptural media such as wood and concrete. Influenced by her architect father, she is intrigued by form, space, and the interaction of light and movement through open spaces.

Through her involvement in art education, Elsaab developed a passion for immersive art—exploring ways to combine imagery, movement, light, and sensory stimuli to create a truly engaging experience for the viewer.

Artist Statement

"When I look around me, I see art moments all the time.

A new reality forms within the reality; the invisible becomes visible, a thin membrane between what we see and what we don’t see. Nature sometimes becomes esoteric, and the obscure becomes clear.

I am fascinated by man's peculiar existence on planet Earth and the lyrical state of our existence, the underlying structures of our cosmos and the natural world, the divine precision that lives within pseudo chaos, and time versus timelessness.

I create intuitively, answering the quest for truth while acknowledging the co-incidental.

By tapping into my subconscious, the authentic, physical world around me often transforms into archetypal shapes, symbols or metaphors: a language that is partly an extension of myself, and an answer to a universal quest.

For me, art is self-expression channelled through the universe, which, in return, reveals art to the artist. The art process happens through us, not because of us. The underlying truths, ironies, and inherent meaning of the world around us become visible when the artist is open to an uninterrupted, free-flowing process where visual stimuli become merely the connection point for a greater reality.

I produce art by transitioning seamlessly between different media, between traditional and digital art. I enjoy the freedom to work in different genres, styles, and mediums and believe that art can only become truthful when it has no boundaries.'
